CURES Update - December 1999

CURES Pursuing Proposals and Supporters

Over the last two months, the CURES Board and its consultants have been pursuing leads and preparing proposals for a number of potential supporters. Proposals are focussing on projects related to water quality protection for both agriculture and urban audiences. Here’s a rundown of our current activities:

Great Valley Center

Great Valley Center provides financial grants and technical assistance to numerous local efforts in Central California including ag-related projects. In late November, GVC opened its most recent round of requests for grant proposals. CURES is submitting a funding request to expand its water quality protection outreach effort for several San Joaquin Valley counties. CURES Board member Therese St. Peter spoke with staff at GVC, who encouraged our efforts. GVC was founded in 1997 and is supported by the Hewett Foundation, James Irvine Foundation, and Packard Foundation. Final decisions on grants are expected by early Spring.

USDA EQIP Program

CURES is finalizing an application for USDA EQIP (Environmental Quality Incentives Program) Funds. EQIP grants are managed by Natural Resources Conservation Services (NRCS) offices in each county. The CURES application, due in early January with a decision expected by May, focuses on Stanislaus, San Joaquin and Merced counties. Key USDA staff in Stanislaus County are extremely supportive of CURES efforts and are advising us as we prepare our application.

Major Financial Institutions

Visits to major financial institutions in California are being organized by CURES fundraising consultant Cathie Bradley. For December and January, visits by Bradley and board chairman Len Richardson or Therese St. Peter will be made to Wells Fargo, Union Bank and Sacramento Valley Farm Credit. Efforts will focus on the surface water quality projects and building on support by Bank of America provided earlier this year.

CURES Reception and Fundraiser

The Orange County Fair Centennial Farm is the site for a southern California CURES reception and fundraiser on February 17. Contact Lon Records or CURES for an invitation to the event.

CURES Fundraising Campaign

Watch your mail for a CURES year-end fundraising campaign to supporters in the crop protection industry. CURES projects showcase the industry’s concern for proper stewardship of crop protection products. As a non-profit educational group, donations to CURES support these important efforts and put to good use any uncommitted funds in company budgets (and contributions are tax deductible).

News Shorts
