For many years the Federal Worker Protection Standard has required that pesticide labels carry information on the type of respiratory protection required to safely handle and apply a product.

In 2008 California implemented strict new rules that update past state regulations that make them consistent with Cal / OSHA respiratory protection regulations. As in the past these rules carry stiff monetary penalties when proper respiratory protection is not used by employees.

The rules mandate that farmers develop and maintain for each employee a written Respiratory Protection Program. This publication highlights important aspects for farmers to understand and follow to remain in compliance.
